Memorial Day at Alewife Reservation -- Ambling down Little River
Excerpt from Oakes Plimpton, May 26, 2008

........We decide to try local boating -- to canoe in Muddy River down by the Alewife, putting in at the the Alewife Reservation parking lot. A challenging canoe, many snags and rocks, and the wind blowing so hard it blew the canoe off the van before we could tie it down on our way out! Fortunately no damage. We had the Alewife urban wilderness to ourselves! All along the river Painted Turtles, Tree Swallows, Kingbirds, Orioles, Yellow Warblers, Cardinals, Catbirds, and then as we entered Little Pond, several Great Blue Herons, and a number of Night Herons, also a Canada pair with goslings, a Cormorant, Mallard Ducks. . . No alewives......
