Photos of Alewife Reservation Deer — September 14, 2007
Today's pictures from Seamus of Somerville, Menotomy Birder

Took a walk around Alewife Reservation this morning at about 11.am . . . I walked under the bridge leading to the soccer field and took a left down to the Alewife Brook where a Cardinal and several Robins were apparent.

As I looped around through the undergrowth I noticed two rather large eyes looking at me!

I couldn’t believe it as I came face to face with a full grown Deer.

I just knew that by the time I got my camera up that it would be long gone. But no!

It was as fascinated with me as I was with it.

Just feet from each other the deer allowed me to capture dozens of shots before it took off as I came closer to stroke it.

A quick clamber up an embankment took me onto busy Route 2 with its’ thousands of cars continually passing by.

I looked back to see if I could see the deer but my friend had disappeared back into the undergrowth.

That is the closest I’ve ever come to a Deer in the wild.

Who would have thought that the busy rotary of Route 2 / Route 16 could be classified as "the wild"?

The Alewife Reservation is a true gem of nature.
