Robert is the bird observer for the Massachusetts Bird Observer Journal, the state's foremost birding journal.

Karsten Hartel is a prolific publisher of scientific journals throughout the world, and his most recent book is Inland Fishes of Massachusetts. He is Curatorial Associate in Ichthyology at Harvard University.

Both renowned New England birders have been looking at Alewife birds for many years. Robert is best known for his annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count at the 10 acre reed marshes across from the threatened silver maple forest, where we spotted nearly 4000 dawn birds several years ago. Harsten has been a regular at Blair Pond over the years and spotted our green winged teal. These sites are at the western end of the Alewife Reservation.
